2013 KHSJA State Convention
9 a.m. to Noon
Thursday, January 24, 2013
Brown Hotel, 225 West Broadway, downtown Louisville
For the first time, the KHSJA state convention will be held in conjunction with the Kentucky Press Association’s annual state convention. KPA founded KHSJA 16 years ago and is our parent organization. Also joining KHSJA and KPA at the Brown Hotel will be the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association and Kentucky News Photographers Association. We’re calling it a mega journalism convention.
We’re planning 12 breakout sessions for high school students. A very preliminary schedule of breakout sessions includes:
–Yearbook design, creating a book that sells out
–TV reporting101 (bring examples of student work on DVD — a maximum of 2 minutes per student and have your work critiqued by a former TV reporter; reporter standups and examples of anchoring are preferred)
–Putting your student newspaper online
–Newspaper page design –basic and advanced, led by Ed Henninger, nationally known newspaper design consultant (Bring your student papers and show them to Ed. He will offer tips and hints on making your work better.)
–The ins and outs of the creation of award-winning graphics
–Photography — and basic and advanced techniques/shooting video too
–What I wish I’d known BEFORE I went to college! – A student panel of college students who’ve been there, done that
–And more!
