The results from the KHSJA 2012-2013 Contest for newspapers, yearbooks and broadcast have been announced. Thanks to all the schools that entered this year’s contest. And thanks to all the teachers and students who submitted entries. Congratulations! Certificates for winning students will be mailed in a few days. As announced last week, we anticipate that next school year’s KHSJA contest will be online — meaning that newspaper and broadcast entries will be submitted via online instead of physically sending us newspaper tear sheets and broadcast entries on DVD. Be sure to save all your newspaper pages and broadcast work on computer hard drive in anticipation of entering them digitally next school year. For now, we think yearbooks will continue to be entered the traditional way by sending us your school’s most recently published yearbook. A major benefit of an online contest will be our ability to provide you with the winning newspaper stories and broadcast entries — something many teachers have wanted for years but until now was not practical for us to do.

An online contest changes that. More details later on changing over to an online contest. Our parent organization, Kentucky Press Association, has converted its contests over to online and with that experience in-house, we now feel KHSJA is on target to do the same.

Without further delay, below is the link to the winners of the 2012-2013 KHSJA Contest. (Reminder: there are no results in Class 2A broadcast because a small number of entries forced us to combine Class A and Class 2A broadcast entries into Class A.)

Click this link to see this year’s contest results.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Nearly 500 high school journalism students and their teachers attended the annual KHSJA convention on Jan. 24 at Louisville’s Brown Hotel. A number of professional journalists made presentations to students on topics ranging from yearbook design to photography for high school newspapers and yearbooks, newspaper design, ways to improve your videography, production techniques as well as on-camera TV work and more. Several schools attended the KHSJA convention for the first time. In addition, seven exhibitors filled the KHSJA trade show. Exhibitors included a yearbook company, colleges and universities from around the state and the national Journalism Education Association. Next year’s KHSJA convention will be on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Lexington. It will mark the first time in its 16 years that the annual KHSJA convention will be held outside of the Louisville area. As it was last month, the 2014 KHSJA convention will be part of the annual Kentucky Press Association convention. KPA is KHSJA’s parent organizer and founder.

Here is the information you will need to enter your students’ work in the 2012-2013 KHSJA contest for newspapers, yearbooks and broadcast. The packet contains important information, e.g. the contest rules, category descriptions, contest entry tags (which are physically taped or stapled to entries), summary registration forms showing how many entries are being submitted and a student name list. Please remember to use our prepared contest entry tags for newspaper and broadcast entries. There are no tags for yearbooks. Although not required, pre-sorting newspaper entries by category is most appreciated since it’s a big help during the entry sorting process in preparation for judging. If you have questions, call David Greer at KHSJA at 502-223-8821 or dgreer@kypress.com. If I’m not in, you can talk with Sue Cammack. Here’s a link to the contest packet www.khsja.com/site/?page_id=227

The 2011-2012 KHSJA contest results are out! They were posted just minutes ago. We appreciate everyone’s patience in waiting for the results. The mild winter and lack of snow days meant the end of school is earlier this year in many districts than most anyone had planned on. That pushed everyone involved in the judging process to work harder and faster to bring you the results. We appreciate all the schools that entered and all of the hard work of the judges and the staff here in our office. To see the 2011-2012 contest results CLICK HERE Congrats to everyone. And by the way, just two schools entered the newspaper category in class A. Since it takes a minimum of 3 schools in a class for a contest, the A schools were combined with 2A schools for judging in the newspaper category.
